Port Bickerton Lighthouse Artist in Residence
The Port Bickerton and Area Planning Association is pleased to once again offer an Artist-in-Residence Program for 2024. The program is designed to offer a period of quiet seclusion and reflection to established artists working on their craft. It offers a time to re-group from busy schedules with uninterrupted time for creative exploration and experimentation.
Port Bickerton, a rural community on the eastern shore of Nova Scotia has a rugged beauty and a rich maritime history. The village hugs the harbour with the lighthouse, interpretive centre and lightkeeper’s house on a jut of land at the most easterly point. The trails and beaches offer visitors a breath of solitude and a poetic Winslow Homer like landscape where the sea never fails to inspire.

The deadline for applications for next season is midnight Monday, January 23rd, 2024. The selection will be made by members of the Port Bickerton Lighthouse Board of Directors. All applicants will be notified of the selected artist within two weeks of the application deadline. The residency award includes two weeks lodging and studio space. Food and transportation are the responsibility of the artist. The residency may be taken between May 1st and November 1st, 2024.
The lightkeeper’s residence is heated, has a kitchen, living room with studio space, two bedrooms and full private bathroom. Public washrooms are on the outside of the building for summer tourists visiting the lighthouse site from 9am – 5 pm. They do not have access to the private residence during your stay.
Rules and Responsibilities for Residents during the Residency
- There is no requirement to produce a body of work, although the residency should be viewed as an outstanding opportunity for artistic development.
- Art materials are not available in the community and although there is one convenience /grocery store for daily necessities the resident artist should plan ahead and bring any specialized supplies. Please feel free to contact the Association board members for suggestions and guidance on what to bring.
- No guests (family or friends) may stay in the residence during the residency and no pets are allowed.
- The residence, studio and their contents must be properly maintained and left in the same condition as at the beginning of the residency.
